If you already have Enigma 2.1 look for a file called enigma21a-upgrade for a shorter download. I am releasing Enigma 2.1a to fix a somewhat significant but cosmetic bug. There is no need to download this version if you already have Enigma 2.1 and are satisfied with it. The bug is triggered if you drag and drop more than a single file onto Enigma with "Remember Key" selected as an option. The program will erroneously tag all files after the first one as being encrypted with full DES [they are NOT!]. Later when you decrypt such files you may get a warning about this fact. The warning can be ignored and the file will decrypt properly. As a bonus I have also made the warning dialog that comes up for an incorrect key much clearer. Let me repeat, the files tagged as full DES are NOT encrypted with full DES. This version does not (and can not due to US export law) contain code to implement full DES. The bug was in the code that determined what file type to assign. Encrypt a file both ways, you will see they are identical. Registered users have no need to upgrade unless you do most of your work with the limited DES mode. For those unfamiliar with Enigma it is an application which can provide near absolute protection for your sensitive documents and applications. By downloading this application you can encrypt files using a limited version of the Government Standard DES algorithm. For only $15 this can be upgraded to the full DES standard (US and Canada only). If you would prefer your neighbors not see your accounting data, your co-workers not see your performance appraisal, or your competitor see your trade secrets then Enigma is an application you will find very valuable. Since version 2.0 Enigma has supported vaults which are like very securely locked file cabinets. Multiple files are stored in them. Files can be added, deleted, renamed, and extracted at any time. Security is much enhanced because filenames and lengths are protected by encryption in addition to the contents. No other free or shareware encryption program offers the flexibility of Enigma vaults. Version 2.1 contains user interface upgrades and bug fixes to Enigma 2.0. The primary features added to version 2.1 are: - Vaults now display the file size along with the file name - Vaults can now be compacted, improving disk space efficiency - There are now options which will prompt the user to confirm dangerous operations - The annoying crash when an incorrect key was entered has been eliminated - Cool Color Icons - You can now extract files from vaults by double clicking on the file name in the vault window. Enigma 2.1 remains fully compatible with previous versions of Enigma. If you possess a version of Enigma prior to Enigma 2.1 I recommend this upgrade (VERY recommended if you have a version older than 2.0). Enigma 2.1 requires system 7.0 or later along with about 512K of memory and 200K of disk space. Documentation enclosed specifies ordering information for a system 6 or earlier compatible version, but the vault features are unavailable. Included with the package is a program that overwrite and delete files so they can not be recovered with a data recovery program such as Norton Utilities (Enigma can also do this automatically if you request it). Enigma 2.1 in this limited form is completely free. No shareware guilt. Somtimes it is easy to forget the fact of time zone, especialy when you are in the Internet. The second problem is that MacSlurp does not support News posting/replying for TheNews 2.3.1 yet; it only supports rnMac at this moment. Unfortunately, rnMac will crash when I have Now Utility 4.0.1p installed. Does > it have more/less features and do I need QuickKeys to > record mouse movements and assign command key > equivalents? Let's get a little clearer about what AppleScript is. Basically it is merely a very convenient way for sending AppleEvents. If your program cannot receive interesting AppleEvents (and most programs cannot), AppleScript cannot operate upon it directly. As a language, AS looks like a better HyperTalk, and, like HyperCard, it is extensible with something like XCMDs (called OSAXs), but basically it does not *do* anything unless you have a target program that is already written in such a way as to hear its messages and act upon them. QuicKeys, on the other hand, simulates simple user actions (select >From a menu, click a button, type a phrase) in virtually *any* program. This is because it doesn't send messages to the program; it takes over the mac itself and fools it into thinking that you, the user, are requesting these actions manually. It, too, is extensible, and comes with a number of extensions that do interesting and useful things. The two are complementary in some ways: for example, you can write a program -- a real program, with variables and loops and subroutines -- in AS; you can simulate a program with QK, but far more clumsily and with less power. The two can also talk to each other, but not as smoothly as one might wish. You can get a basic AppleScript kit direct from APDA for a mere $20; this includes a HyperCard documentation file which is quite adequate. You can get AppleScript and better documentation (and some extra capabilities) by buying the book, The Tao of AppleScript. >I would like to create scripts to > automate certain mudane tasks such as dimming the monitor > and changing the sound input device. I believe this can > be done with AppleScript Neither can be done with AppleScript alone, as far as I know. You'd need an extension of some sort (I could be wrong about this.) At least QK could be "programmed" to (say) open the Sound control panel and press the necessary sequence of button to change the sound input device. m. -------- matt neuburg, phd = clas005@csc.canterbury.ac.nz ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Nov 1993 09:12:59 -0500 (EST) From: "Michael A. There is a non-plastic solution to your problem. Go to your local stationery store (or just about any drug store) and buy a box of envelopes (4 1/8 by 9 1/2 size). Seal an empty envelope, take a pair of scissors, and cut the sealed envelope in half. You will end up with two disk-size sleeves into which you can pop a floppy or two. Works as good as the plastic sleeves (better, in some ways, because there is no static cling!), and you can write on them. You can even go crazy and get envelopes in designer colors! Michael E. The infernal/internal 1.44 MB floppy drive on my old Mac IIcx hasn't worked for a couple of years now (I've survived by using file sharing with another Mac:-). My wife & I recently removed it and cleaned out a lot of dust sucked in by the IIcx's fan, but the disk drive still doesn't work. I have seen advertisements from folks who promise to repair/exchange broken drives for $65-$100 or so, and have also seen ads for new 1.44 MB drives for $250 or so. Does anybody have any recent experience with such repairs? Could you recommend (or advise against) a particular service or company? (I'd prefer one in the eastern half of the US, where I live.) Hi Al, I don't know of such a source, and frankly, I don't recommend you bother looking. When I worked in the public rooms at Cornell, we actively discouraged students from using those sleeves because they tend to hold dirt and crumbs and the like, so putting the disk in the sleeve after every use made sure that it was guaranteed to be in a dirty environment. Loose floppies seemed to fare better if some caution was taken. We did plenty of disk recovery, believe me. Of course, the simple answer is to get a hard plastic case, which will prevent the disk from being bent or the shutter from getting munged. I've seen them in one, five, and ten disk sizes commonly, and larger sizes are of course available as well, I'm sure. cheers ... -Adam Adam C. The cause can be related to three possible reasons: - the **power-supply** &/or **logic board** (expensive!) - the **motherboard battery** - problems concerning the **internal HD**. [Note for the moderators: if the following summary is too long to be included as a normal digest message, put it into a file in the info directory and cut here] There have been answers going into quite different directions and I must confess I do not know yet in which category my problems fall! **Rick Zaccone** says: >I just had this problem repaired on my IIci. Replacing the logic >board is expensive (about $600 with a trade-in). Replacing the power >supply is fairly cheap (about $130). It was the power supply. On the same line **Scott Kaplan** explains how to diagnose if the problem is caused by the power supply: >I had the same IIci power supply problem, and finally, this summer, it got so >bad that it wouldn't start up at all. Sounds to me like this thing patches the behavior of the memory manager, which scares the hell out of me. Anyone have reactions, or any real hands-on experience with this thing??? My guess, without actually having used the product is that what it does is turn on the CPU's memory management, but not run virtual memory. Why? Because the memory manager can be used simply to map from one address to another. Thus, if you have run and quit out of some applications such that the total "holes" in memory are enough to launch something, but they are not contiguous, you can use re-mapping to make them look contiguous. As I said, this is just a guess, from the ad copy. And you can get the same effect (coalescing the free holes in your memory) by simply quitting everything and relaunching, so this isn't a product you "must have"; but it's a clever use of the memory manager without comitting you to a lot of disk space. Yes, there is. Try the following: 1) In your bank account, select the transaction for the bank fees and memorize it (command-M). 2) From the View Menu, select "Transaction Groups." When the palette appears click the "New" button. 3) The window that appears has three sections. In the Transaction Group section, enter a name for your "group" (maybe "Bank Fees"?) and select the bank account from the popup menu. In the Reminder Setting section, select a frequency from the popup menu (monthly?), enter the next date that the fees will be charged, and check the box labeled "Enter Automatically". Finally, in the bottom section place a check mark need the transaction that you memorized in step 1. 4) Now save everything and the next time the bank fees are due, Quicken will automatically post the transaction in your account register. But on the larger question, Akira writes: > If I can't get it to do this I will have to send it back. SEND IT BACK IMMEDIATELY. Quicken 4 has more bugs than the Amazon basin. It is unstable and unpredictable. Intuit technical support is total inadequate and they DO NOT inform their customers of the availability of bug fixes (few though these have been). Intuit was reachable on the Internet, but, since the release of Quicken 4, their site (intuit.com) no longer exists. Well, they can run but they can't hide. I received help on two of the problems; the unsolved one is perhaps the most annoying. Here's the deal: Often when I shut down or restart, after it shuts down any open apps, the Finder freezes. I can still move the mouse, but other than that the computer is frozen. Force-quitting the Finder ([Command][Opt][Esc]) generates a type 41 error. What is a type 41 error? Anybody know which extension is causing this? (It's one of those in that list I gave in the original letter.) Subject: Stylewriter & WriteNow (two separate Qs) Dear Netters, First off: Has anyone with a Stylewriter I experienced a warped piece of the body of the Stylewriter? Part of my sheet feeder is warped making the feeding mechanism act up by first feeding in a sheet then grabbing the next sheet for printing (what does this mean, how can this be fixed?). The front end feeder does the same thing and is harder to align the sheets so they print out fine. Does anyone know how to fix a stylewriter so it prints on the first sheet that feeds in? Or should I find "An Apple Service Technician" to fix it? It is 2 years old. Second: In WriteNow 3.0 I can't seem to tell the headers section not to print a 1 on the first page, is there anyway of doing this without forcing all odd pages not to have their page #s printed? Would replacing the StyleWriter's ink cartridge with some other type of ink make any difference? Is this even possible? 2. Is this a StyleWriter-only problem, or is this a general issue with inkjet printers in general? Any info from out there in cyberspace would be greatly appreciated! I am considering purchasing a HD with removable carts (Syquest format) and I have found ads for a couple of different brands that I am considering. Specifically, I am referring to the PLI Infinity 40 and MACLAND drives. The MACLAND drives are cheaper (i.e. I can get one that uses 88mb carts for about the same price as the PLI (which uses 44's), but I am aware that this might also be indicative of the relative quality of the products. The reason I am writing is to ask for any advice on this matter or on the idea of removable HD's in general. I am not interested in the big-time multi-gig storage items, but I looking for more HD space as I managed to eat up the 80 MB on my IIsi quicker than I expected--the only downside to places like SUMEX...fills up HD's! :) My price range is around $500. I will post a summary if there is much interest in any replies... Thanks in advance! At the time, I came up with a simple list of requirements: 1) Works on large files 2) Allows you to set font/style 3) Uses keyboard-based paging commands (space, pgup, pgdn, etc.) 4) Interprets common ASCII formatting commands 5) Interprets RTF files I never found anything to satisfy requirments (well, call them "hopes") 4 and 5. I did find 3 programs which satisfy some of the requirements. Easy View 2.33: Easy View allows you to view text files, and of course it is able to intelligently parse various plain-text file formats like setext, mail files, digests, etc. While it satisfies requirements 2 and 3, it has a fairly serious file size limitation. I tried to look at several ~1 megabyte plain text files, and I could not view anything beyond ~100K or so. It just stopped. I hold out some hope that this limitation might be avoided if the files were in setext format, but I really don't have the time to wrap them in setext. In addition, several of the logical "sections" of the file are very, very large... much larger than the apparent size limit Easy View can see. MoreOrLess: The program was sent to me without any real indication of whether it could be distributed or not. It does a fabulous job on files of any size, but it's limited to 9 point Monaco. It uses the standard unix more-style keyboard commands. I also get the impression that it is seriously beta-level. LookAtIt: This was sent to me by a gentleman in Europe. It satisfies requirements 1, 2, and 3, and is therefore the most complete program I've yet found. While it will work with large files, it is slow and requires a memory allocation slightly larger than the file you want to view (hence, it would be very difficult to use it with 10MB files, for example). Font size and type can be set, and it uses the standard set of UNIX-like paging commands. Unfortunately, I can't distribute these last 2 programs. Perhaps the authors will make them generally available at some point in the near future. Does the VidSpig *only* do QuickTime-sized full-motion input or can it also do full-screen (640x480) frame-grabs? Anyone have any pos/neg comments about the VidSpig? How about for ComputerEyes? I would prefer to avoid the ComputerEyes/RT due to it being SCSI in nature (I just had a horrible time with SCSI problems after installing a new external hard drive--SCSI is too fragile to risk losing more files in order to capture video), so if anyone has pos/neg reviews of the Color version of ComputerEyes (NuBus), I'd be grateful.
